DevataThree Gorges Project

by Murty Devata

Chapter News

Chack Lee delivered a lecture to Ontario Chapter on October first. A large number of TAC members boosted by many former Ontario Hydro colleagues, were treated to a lecture by Prof. C. F. Lee on China's "Yangzte River Floods and the Three Gorges Project".

Chack, who was a founding member of TAC and its first Secretary/Treasurer gave us a clear and interesting picture of not only geotechnical issues, but also the rationale behind the need for this immense project.

We thank Chack Lee for his effort to make the tiring trip from Hong Kong to Toronto to be with us and for

his continuing interest in TAC Affairs.

Sheppard Subway Line Evenings

The Sheppard line Construction engineers delivered a summary presentation on all aspects of this interesting project. The presentation coincided with the time when the Sheppard Subway Twin Tunnels Contract near 80 % completion. This was an appropriate time for a presentation on the tunnelling experience gained to-date from

the client, consultant and contractor perspectives. The project is managed for the Toronto Transit Commission, by the Delcan Hatch JV, comprising Delcan, Hatch Mott McDonald, in conjunction with O'Brien Kreitzberg and Parsons DeLeuw Cather. The program Geotechnical Consultant is Golder Associates and the Twin Tunnels Contractor is a Joint Venture formed by S. McNally, PCL (Eastern) and Foundation.

The Twin Tunnels Contract comprises driving approximately 7.9 km of 5.9 m external diameter precast concrete lined tunnel, using two LOVAT Earth Pressure Balance TBMs in poor ground conditions. The Contract also includes a significant amount of cut and cover tunnelling and construction of several ancillary structures in sensitive locations.

The panel comprised:

J.R. Collins Project/Contract Overview

M. Malott Contractor's Perspective

G. Bouwer Lining Construction and Tunnelling

D. Norman Cut and Cover Construction
