LOVAT Sells 2 Additional Metro TBMs to Singapore

Lovat has been selected to supply tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for the Singapore Metro Changi Airport Line under Contract 503A after an intensive 6 month procedure of prequalification, dialogue sessions, tender bids and tender clarifications. In January 1998, the Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded the contract to LOVAT. Manufacturing of the twin 6.15m diameter EPB TBMs will begin immediately. The Changi Airport Line, which is expected to open for service in end of year 2001, will link the existing MRT network to the Singapore Changi Airport terminal buildings. The two LOVAT RME242SE's will tunnel a total length of 7km and install a prefabricated concrete segmental lining consisting of 5 segments and 1 key segment. The lining will

have an outside diameter of 5.9m, an inside diameter of 5.4m and each ring is 1.4m in length. The maximum depth of cover is 22m. Tunnelling through sand, weak sandstone and occasional clay layers, the TBMs will be equipped with mixed face cuttingheads to cope with the variable ground conditions. The scheduled delivery dates to site, for the LOVAT RME242SEs are January 27, 1999 for TBM No. 1 and February 24, 1999 for TBM No. 2.

Twin Lovat TBMS to Edmund Nuttall

LOVAT Inc. has recently signed a contract with EDMUND NUTTALL of the U.K. for the purchase of 2 No. LOVAT RME 131 SE Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines. The Portsmouth & Havant WTW & SRC Transfer Tunnel Project, for client Southern Water, entails two tunnel drives totalling almost 8 km through varying degrees of geology. Drive 1, headed in a south and south-east direction, will excavate predominantly chalky formations with a flint content ranging from 5.1 % to 60 %. The EPB TBM along this drive will excavate a more uniform geology comprising Newhaven and Culver Chalks with a fint content of 5.1 % and 14.4 % respectively. The tunnel alignment for the two drives are below the water table with an average depth of 21 m. The LOVAT EPB TBM will feature a Mixed Face cuttinghead capable of Open and Earth Pressure Balance excavation modes. A configuration of scrappers, rippers, and disc cutters has been decided upon that best suits the varying geology. A three spoke cuttinghead design will be powered by 6 hydraulic motors via 2 No. 188 kW Electric Motors for 376 kW of toal available power. The spoil will initially be removed via a 10 m long screw conveyor complete with EPB sensors, guillotine doors, and inspections covers where a 38 m long belt conveyor will finish removing the excavated spoil. It is the first tunnelling project LOVAT and EDMUND NUTTALL have entered into a contractual agreement.
