You tend not to say “gay.” Why not?

I had to say “gay” in my title to attract your attention. But this FAQ is not really about Catholic gayness. Gayness is a special way of being that does not directly belong in the bear culture. Gayness is CQ magazine, gay politics, Gay Pride parades, boyish good looks, cologne, gold neck bracelets, avocado salads with vinaigrette, texture-coordinated interior decorating—you get the picture. Gay stuff is kewl in its way. “Catholic” is Greek for “Universal” (literally, “According to the Whole”), the idea being that everything, no matter how odd, can be taken up and affirmed and purified by God, in its own odd way, into one huge and diverse and wild and wacky Church. “In my Father’s house are many mansions,” and the mansion under discussion in this-here FAQ ain’t that-there gay mansion. Nuff said.
