The ITA will hold its 27th General Assembly at the 2001 world Tunnel Congress in Milan Italy from 10 to 13 June 2001. The general theme of the congress is Progress in Tunnelling After 2000, and the specific themes are as follows:

History and archaeology
Industrialisation in tunnel construction
Project financing
Tunnels upgrading and widening
Underground construction and the environment
Major projects in progress

Post conference tours include trips to tunnels in Italy and Switzerland. Abstracts of 200 words are due by 30 April 2000.

ITA WORKING GROUPS
The ITA has 12 Working Groups (WG) that investigate specific topics related to tunnelling. A brief summary of each of the active working groups is listed below, including the scope of their investigations.

The resistance of tunnel structures to fire. (This study is of critical importance to the international tunnelling industry, particularly in view of the recent fires in two road tunnels in Europe. The study will focus on transport tunnels and will be carried out in conjunction with the World Road Association - PIARC.)

WG 11-Immersed and Floating Tunnels
