Grandstand Stadium DemolitionVote

On July 30, 1998 Toronto City Council voted on Joe Pantalone's motion to demolish the CNE Grandstand Stadium. The vote was YES: 42, NO: 1. Motion Carried. The only NO vote came from maverick councillor Judy Sgro who decided to vote with her conscience, and not along party lines.

Joe Pantalone is Councillor and Chair of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Since his fifteen odd year tenure at the CNE he has systematically stripped the CNE of its original lustre, magic and dignity. Mr. Pantalone should resign! Leave. Hasta la vista!

The vote below proves once again that Toronto City Council should not be making decisions about our architectural heritage. It shows us of the need to establish an arms-length Toronto Historical Board with teeth, unlike the current Board that has been declawed & neutered.

Toronto City Council and Toronto Historical Board

Public Enemy No.1 to heritage.

URBANISM

Urbanism is dedicated to Canadian Modern Architecture & Design, and to the Preservation of Architecture across the Dominion of Canada. Urbanism was launched in mid-1998 in a campaign to save Toronto's CNE Grandstand Stadium from demolition. Urbanism is a resourse for the public to utilise and act if they so choose. These will include demolition alerts, new construction, databases on Modern Architecture, General Canadian Architecture, Architects, Industry, and Canadian Industrial Design.
