THE SCARLET CLAW (1944) 74 MINUTES
Director:
Roy William Neill
Cast: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce,
Gerald Hamer.
Only a plea from a dead woman can
wrestle Holmes away from a Royal Canadian Occult Society meeting to
unmask the phantom murderer terrorizing a Quebec village. By
far the best of the Sherlock Holmes series.
I CONFESS
(1953) 95 MINUTES
Director:
Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Montgomery Clift, Anne Baxter,
Karl Malden.
A young priest harbouring his own
secrets hears a murderer's confession only to be framed instead for
the crime. Can he save himself or will his vows of silence
doom him? Filmed in Quebec City.
JOURNEY INTO FEAR
(1943) 69 MINUTES
Director: Norman Foster
Cast: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Dolores Del Rio.
With Nazi agents closing in on him, a US
engineer attempts to throw off pursuit by fleeing on board ship only to
find out that they made it on as well. Taut, well-made thriller.
5 FINGERS (1952)
108
MINUTES
Director: Joseph Mankeiwicz
Cast: James Mason, Danielle Darrieux, Michael Rennie.
The brainy and overly ambitious valet of
the British ambassador to Turkey finances his "early" retirement plan by
selling secrets to the Nazis. Betrayal and counter-betrayal builds
to a climax of delicious irony. One of the best Hitchcock films he
never made.
YOUNG AND INNOCENT (1937)
UK 80 MINUTES
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Derrick de Marney, Nova Pilbeam, Mary Clare.
Hitchcock combines classic thriller techniques with
his trademark black humour in this adaptation of the Josephine Tey novel
of a young girl helping a runaway man prove his innocence. Echoes
of The 39 Steps run throughout.
THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR (1952)
UK 88
MINUTES
Director: Lawrence Huntington
Cast: Michael Denison, Dulcie Gray, Marjorie Fielding.
Based on another of Tey's great novels, an initially
reluctant lawyer takes on a strange case of kidnapping and abuse over
the increasing rancour of the village. Rarely seen.
GASLIGHT (1940) UK 84
MINUTES
Director: Thorold Dickinson
Cast: Anton Walbrook, Diana Wynyard, Robert Newton.
This gripping psychological thriller exposes dark
Machiavellian roots as an emotionally fragile wife is slowly being
driven insane by her husband. The electric tension in this, the UK
original, overpowers the glossier 1944 MGM remake. Not to be
missed.
DRANGONWYCK (1945) 103 MINUTES
Director: Joseph Mankeiwicz
Cast: Gene Tierney, Vincent Price, Walter Huston.
In his directorial debut, Mankeiwicz paints a dandy
gothic tale of a naive young woman who is swept up into the secret
desires and undertows of her cousin's family. Richly textured with
outstanding photography and a haunting score.

Hardboiled P.I. Max Shayne runs into multiple
predicaments trying to soothe his impatient fiancée
and deal with troublesome police amidst his search for the links in a
string of theatrical murders.
BLACK ANGEL (1946) 80 MINUTES
Director: Roy William Neill
Cast: Dan Duryea, June Vincent, Peter Lorre.
An alcoholic piano player attempts to wade through
the booze-laden fog swirling around the night his ex-wife was killed.
Can he solve the mystery before the clock runs out for an innocent man?
THE MIAMI STORY (1954) 75 MINUTES
Director: Fred F. Sears
Cast: Barry Sullivan, Beverly Garland, Luther Adler.
You know Miami's tax dollars are being well spent
when civic leaders hire ex-gangster Mick Flagg to tackle and bring down
the local crime boss. But old habits die hard and the politicians
get a bit nervous of his means to an end.
WARNING SHOT (1967) 99
MINUTES
Director: Buzz Kulik
Cast: David Janssen, Ed Begley, Keenan Wynn.
A stakeout goes horribly wrong for a LAPD cop when he
shoots a saintly doctor. The action never stops as he chases the
ever-eluding truth to clear his name. This forgotten gem features
a stellar supporting cast including Lillian Gish, Eleanor Parker, George
Sanders and Carroll O'Connor.

SABOTAGE (1936)
UK 76
MINUTES
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Sylvia Sidney, Oscar Homolka, John Loder.
This layered, visually powerful edge-of-your-seat
thriller is arguably Hitch's best UK film. As a cinema owner plots
to set off a bomb in London, his wife's growing suspicions begin to
unveil his monstrous secret life. The tension mounts to a
Shakespearean ending brimming with irony. Based on Joseph Conrad's
novel, The Secret Agent.
THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY (1955) 99 MINUTES
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Edmund Gwenn, Shirley MacLaine, John Forsythe.
Unease lies beneath the joviality and colourful fauna
of New England as the irrepressible corpse of Harry causes all sorts of
dilemmas for the peaceful inhabitants. Another little seen,
offbeat black comedy from the master.
