TORONTO FILM SOCIETY

MILESTONES

1934

The beginnings of National Film Society (Ottawa) and film society movement take hold almost spontaneously with branches in many Canadian Cities. With the advent of war, virtually all the branches suspended operations.
1948 TORONTO FILM STUDY GROUP established by Dorothy and Oscar Burritt and other film enthusiasts started a Summer Series with screenings in the studios of Panda Photography at 321 Church Street, a converted coach house. First regular season of TFSG. Sternberg's "The Blue Angel", double-billed with "Cyprus Is An Island", a 1946 documentary as the first programme on October 25th, at the Royal Ontario Museum Theatre.
1949 Second season as the TORONTO BRANCH of the NATIONAL FILM SOCIETY. After the war, Ottawa central office of NFC reorganized as the Canadian Film Institute and eventually disinherited all regional branches.
1950 Third season as TORONTO FILM SOCIETY. Incorporated by Ontario Letters Patent as a non-profit educational and cultural association "for the study and appreciation of film as an art" First Directors: Gerald Pratley (first President), Roy Clifton, Donald Smith, Philip Budd, Moira Armour, Dorothy Burritt, Sterling Campbell, Peter Engering, George Patterson, Benedetto Viccari, Nola Holdaway

1953

Canadian Federation of Film Societies (CFFS) formed as a division of CFI. Dorothy Burritt among the founding members.

1954

Original series named the MAIN SERIES.

1954

SILENT SERIES inaugurated.

1954

First TFS NEWSLETTER (March 1954)

1959

First SEMINAR

1959

TFS hosted the CFFS Annual General Meeting for the first time.

1963

First annual SUMMER SERIES.

1973

First FILM BUFF SERIES.

1978

MAIN SERIES re-named INTERNATIONAL SERIES.

1980

FILM BUFF SERIES split into A and B.

1983

EASTMAN HOUSE VISIT reinstated as an annual activity.

1990

CFFS disbanded and turned over records to the National Archives. TFS took over the administration of Dorothy and Oscar Burritt Memorial Award.(established in 1964 as the Dorothy Burritt Memorial Award.)

1998

Toronto Film Society celebrated its 50th year. The SUMMER SERIES was programmed by requests from its members.
