Like The Third Man, Carol Reed's powerful and moving film is based on a story and script by Graham Greene. Centering on the relationship between an impressionable young boy and his parents' butler (played by Ralph Richardson), the film is beautifully shot by Georges Périnal in sets that play almost as important a part in the plot as the characters do.
