Authors
always have a million questions.
WHAT
WE ACCEPT
First
of all, please read (and then read again) our submission
guidelines. Keep in mind that Golden
Pheasant Press specializes in books about historical research
and collecting, particularly: medals
and insignia, militaria, award histories, serial numbers, rank and seniority
lists, organization and unit histories, facsimile period reprints,
military biography,
military history and
chivalric and knightly orders.
We
do not accept submissions of general fiction, literary
fiction, or poetry. We also have a strong policy against anything
offensive, obscene, racist or that glorifies regimes like Nazi Germany.
This is particularly important since many of the titles we are working
on deal with collecting interests from that time period.
Your
work does not have to be long. If the information is of interest,
a 10 page book can be just as valuable to collectors as a long reference
work.
HOW
WE PRINT
We
are a publisher that uses a Print On Demand (POD) system. Books can be
of any length, and can be bound either as standard paperbacks,
saddle-stitched or spiral bound. Various sizes are also available.
Paperback bindings may require a minimum number of pages. The
covers are in full color and the inside is black and white text
with grayscale images.
For
authors who prefer the digital world for things like searchable
databases of serial numbers, rank or unit membership, we also publish professional
data CD-ROMs, complete with full direct color printing on the CD,
jewel case and full color insert or booklet.
All
printing, packaging, shipping and payment for your work is handled by a
company we work with that specializes in Print On Demand services. Your
work will appear for sale on a high-traffic website run by them,
this website, plus you can link it to any other website you
control. Negotiations are underway to have books published through
this POD company also listed for sale on Amazon.com and Barnes
& Noble. Purchases of your work by the public are made by credit card on a
secure server and shipped within 3 days by the POD company. We can
offer you substantial bulk discounts (at as few as 15 books) when
you order copies of your book for yourself.
HOW
WE BOTH MAKE MONEY
When
someone orders a copy of your book, our Print on Demand partner
calculates its cost based on the binding selected and total
number of pages. That is the base cost. We then set a price
for the book over and above that base cost. The difference is
the gross profit, of which from 40% to 60% is paid to the author
as your royalty. This royalty to you compares to the traditional
industry standard of author royalties of between 10% and 12%
of a book's sale price. Shipping and handling is handled by
the POD partner, who bills the purchaser of your book directly.
There are no hidden fees or transaction charges for things like
credit card transactions. Golden Pheasant Press generally
pays author royalties quarterly in arrears.
COPYRIGHT
A
word about copyright. As author you own copyright to your book.
That doesn't change when you work with us. In fact, publishing
your book helps assert your copyright. We
are able to provide an ISBN number for certain books. You may cancel your
arrangement with Golden
Pheasant Press at any time on one month's notice (to clear
out back orders), and take all of the rights to your book
elsewhere. We will remove your book from our catalog within 5
working days.
DIGITAL
SUBMISSIONS
Eventually
you will be required to submit a final manuscript in MS Word
format (PC or Mac), so if you are writing it out in longhand -
learn how to use a computer. As
publisher we expect to do some formatting and cleanup for free, although
we also expect our authors to try to submit according to our templates
and layout suggestions. We are happy to do cover design for
free as part of our commitment to you and making your project look
its best. We will rarely take on projects that require extensive
editing or other hands-on help with the creative end. Advice to
authors is always free.
To not be too
delicate, some people are not as good with English as they may
believe. We will tell you early on if your writing needs help. We
know you want the final product to be useful, professional and something
you are proud of (actually, proper English should be "something
of which you are proud", but you already knew that).
We
look forward to hearing from you.
