Ruthie's Tiny Mittens!
Tiny Mittens
These mittens started out as an adornment for a wonderful quilt designed for and made by Ruthie's daughter, but they are just the cutest thing - and perfect for dolls, key chains, sweater adornment, package toppers, Christmas tree decoration - you name it! Your imagination is the limit.
Materials: 14m of yarn. I used Koigu Premium Merino.
Method on knitting machine: (knit on a LK150. If knitting on a standard bed, change to T#7 and T#8)
1. Cast on over 15 stitches on every second needle, T#-1
2. Knit 8 rows, T#1
3. Hem, filling in empty needles so you have 15 stitches.
4. Knit to row 24 with T#2. Pull thread through stitches and gather.
5. Sew up side seam, leaving a space for the thumb.
6. Cast on 5 stitches, and knit 2 rows T#2. Knit 8 rows, knitting one way, slipping the other (I-cord). Reduce to 3 stitches, and knit 4 more rows of I-cord. Put thread through loops, and cut, saving enough of a yarn tail to applique onto the quilt, if applicable.
Hand Knit Instructions: (use 3.0 and 3.5 needles)
1. With smaller needles, cast on 15 stitches
2. Knit 8 rows of K1,P1 rib
3. Change to larger needles and knit 14 more rows. Pull thread through the stitches and gather
4. Sew up side seam, leaving a space for the thumb
5. Cast on 5 stitches on larger needles. Knit I-cord (knit one row, turn and slip 1 row, and repeat these 2 rows) for 8 rows
6. Next row, k2tog, k1, k2tog (3 stitches remain)
7. Next row slip 3 stitches, next row knit 3 stitches, next row slip 3 stitches
8. Cut yarn leaving a long tail to sew onto the quilt, thead the tail throught the loops and gather. Run the thread through the thumb, attaching the thumb to the mitt and sew onto the quilt, if applicable.
