Ruthie's Easy Mittens!
Mitts for Jenn
This is a very warm mitt, since both the body and thumb are double thickness. The pattern was written using 4-ply yarn on a standard gauge knitting machine without a ribber. For different gauge machines vary the number of stitches and you will get different size mitts. This pattern ended up an adult size.
1. Cast on 60 sts in waste yarn
2. knit a few rows, then knit one row of ravel cord.
3. With T#4, knit 40 rows, and hem, at T#7.
4. Using T#6, knit 90 rows.
5. Make eyelets along whole row, then knit another 90 rows.
6. Hang top of hem onto the needles, and latch off using T#10.
7. For the thumb, e-wrap cast on 26 stitches. Knit using T#6, for 40 rows. Do an eyelet row, then knit another 40 rows. Cast off loosely.
8. Variations for this mitt, would be to cast on every second needle and knit the mock rib for 18 rows. Put every needle in wp, and knit 22 rows and hem. I definitely would do this on a midgauge or bulky machine.
9. Another variation would be to use fairisle if your machine has this ability. Since the mitts are double, you do not have to worry about floats.
10. Sew up the mitts as shown in the diagram:
Figure 1 shows the mitt, not sewn up. Figure 2 shows how you sew up the side seam just until the place the thumb fits in. Fold the thumb in half, lengthwise (along the eyelet row), and sew down the side seam the length of your thumb. You should have the bottom part of thumb with the seam not sewn. Put the mitt on, and sew around the thumb, so it is comfortable. Sew the thumb flap inside the mitt (Figure 3). The secret is to sew up the mitt while wearing. This is possible, since there is no right or left mitt.
