Lipstick tree (bixa orellana)

Catalog # 56 - An attractive tree with large jade green leaves and heart shaped fruit. Dazzling round fuzzy flowers hang in neat clusters. The seeds are crimson and are used as a natural coloring agent. The local aboriginal natives of the carribean used the annato dye on their bodies; painting themselves a fiery orange red whenever they went in to battle; Scaring their foes into thinking they were supernatural demons. These days the dye is used in cheese, margarine, candy, chocolate, cloth, lipstick and soap.
