Cashew nut (annacardium occidentale)

Catalog # 13 - A very easy to grow ornamental from which is harvested the palatable cashew nut. Scoring the seed will produce a seedling in a few weeks that can grow into a fair sized tree depending on potsize. Richly scented flowers give way to the red fruit which contains a cashew nut seed on the bottom. The leaves are long ovate and ribbed turning a reddish hue in the summer sunlight. It can grow to as high as 4 ft (1.2cm) in a year, and thrives in direct or partial sunlight. The soil should be moist but never soggy. When germinating, score along the hump of the seed and place close to the top of the soil. Mist occasionally.
