Conservation in Costa Rica and globally

The Rara Avis Rainforest Reserve was built to show the people of Costa Rica and the world that it is more profitable to use the rainforests and their resources in a way that will not destroy them.

Mankind relies on the earth's rainforests for much of its water and oxygen supply. Can there be any better reason to protect them?

The balance of nature within any ecosystem is fragile. Species are obliterated into extinction every day around the world by the razing of its natural resources; often, rainforests are burned to make grazing land for cattle and other agricultural usage.

The problem is that rainforest soil is notoriously poor for supporting crops and grazing. After a year or two, the farmers/ranchers are unable to support themselves on the land any longer, so they look for more rainforests to burn.

Who knows when the species of insect, plant or fungus which is made extinct will be the one that held the secret to the cure for AIDS, or a better, cleaner fuel, or even a principle for better transportation or communications.

This section of the website will featuring an ever-growing collection of resources on conservation initiatives and the need to protect the environment, both in Costa Rica and globally. You'll find links to other conservation resources on the Internet from our links page.
