Costa Rica boasts over 800 different species of birds (the Rara Avis reserve alone has hosted 360.)
If you've never birded, but always wanted to, Costa Rica is a particularly good place to enjoy the experience. The country's diverse climate and geographical patterns have created many different habitats, each of which has its own blend of regular and occasionally viewed birds.
The country has many national parks and other protected areas, and often you can hire a trained guide who can introduce you to the birds.
Experienced and novice birders are invited to download our Costa Rican bird list, set out in taxonomical order and cross-referenced to the illustration plates of Stiles & Skutch's The Birds of Costa Rica, the country's best field guide to the birds.
