The Elysium of May 2000

"Governments need to have both shepherds and butchers."
- Voltaire (1694–1778), French philosopher, author.

The Prince: Marcel Falquer of Clan Toreador.

The Primogen Council

Elysium was held on May 16th in the year of our Lord 2000, at the Power Plant, a local art gallery.

At the beginning of the evening, the Prince made several announcments, outlining several points that concerned him. The first was the lack of attendance. He stated that "There are certain expectations that some people aren't aware of, and I'd like you to be aware of them, so people have full knowledge of what they do. I see our numbers are less this evening, so once again I will reiterate: if you do not chose to attend the salons, please make your Primogen aware of why, because I like to see my subjects."

The Prince also talked about his expectations of his subjects behaviour, saying "There is a way of dealing with people who are of Status. Everyone who is Acknowlegded here knows who their Primogen members are, and that they should be treated accordingly. Even if a member of the Primogen Council is not your Primogen, they should still be treated with respect. This is a lecture I wouldn't have to give if the Primogen Council saw fit to elect a Harpy, but I'm sure they'll do so this evening.

"This lecture is necessary none the less, because people take it upon themselves, because they're in the protection of an Elysium, and under my gaze and my protection, to say whatever pops into their heads. Please understand that the Traditions say that no kindred shall kill, but if you are rude to, for instance, the Brujah Primogen, who is old, and wise, there might be certain repercussions. Now, he probably wouldn't take this course of action, but you don't know him very well. But if you were rude to him here, and he later walks outside this Elysium, sees you, and decides that you were using the protection of the Elysium to say whatever you liked, and decided to teach you a lesson, that would be fine, because he is your better.

"I think that's pretty clear. Everyone that I see here, as far as I know, has not had such a problem."

Of course, this was the way things had been since the inception of the Camarilla, and perhaps some of the Elders present were puzzled as to why the Prince felt it necessary to state the obvious. But given Toronto's history, it was possible that the Prince was merely attempting to nip any potential problems in the bud.

This night was devoted to ensuring that several stations critical to the control of a Domain were filled. Some actively campaigned for certain stations: Idaho Merchant, the Ventrue Primogen, wished to be Harpy, and Ano Domini of the Nosferatu hoped to be Keeper of Elysium. Others were suggested by the members of the Primogen Council, but all candidates were interviewed.

Idaho Merchant was very interested in becoming Harpy, almost anxious, but the rest of the Primogen Council talked him out of it, convincing him to stay Primogen, mainly because he was the only Ventrue present in the city at that point, and his Clan's perspective was needed on the Council. In the end, the job went to a Toreador by the name of Thomas Randolph.

Ano Domini, a Nosferatu Elder, had actively campaigned to become Keeper of Elysium, but he initially was not trusted by the Council, because it made no sense for an Elder to come to Toronto unless they had been somehow disgraced. The Council initially leaned towards awarding the position to Salud Esdras of Clan Toreador, but in the end, Domini somehow convinced the Council of his worthiness, and the position was his.

Teak Southbern of Clan Brujah had no idea what was going on when he was summoned by the Council, and was surprised when told that he was a candidate for the position of either Sheriff or Scourge. But after thinking about the choice for a short time, he decided on becoming the city's Scourge.

This left only the Sheriff position to be filled, and after little debate, the position was awarded to Salud Esdras of Clan Toreador.

The Nosferatu Clan had their hands full this night. A subway train derailed, and crashed through a wall of it's underground tunnel, exposing warrens that were unknown to the mortals operating the transit system. This forced the Nosferatu to scramble to maintain the Masquerade, but it the end they were successful. But evidence was discovered indicating that the train had been sabotaged to derail at that point in the tunnels...

Back at the Elysium, the evening ended with the Harpy's announcement of the creation of a new coterie, The Society of the Mask, to enforce the Masquerade. No doubt many hoped that the Society would never have to exercise its mandate, but if the Nosferatu Clan's experience that evening was any indication, that was wishful thinking.
