Lucien Hawke's 'Epiphany' Video

Written by Neil Kennedy, and used with permission. This is a description of a music video produced by the 'Toronto by Night' character Lucien Hawke. In game terms, abilities are rated on a scale from 0 to 5, with 5 being the most proficient. In this video, the singing, guitar work, song writing, and musical performance are all rated at 5. The music style is industrial rock. It is not a really hard song, but would be considered very moving, tragic, danceable, and catchy. Something like Delirium, but "better". The song was released on the 3rd week of Jan. 1999 (rather then the expected date due to production delays by tropical storm "Jen"). It was televised on MuchMusic, City TV, Bravo, MTV, etc. It was broadcast on every rock station (e.g. CFNY, Q107, CIUT, etc.). This would be considered an extended mix video/song.

The music at the beginning is dark, involving chanting, using deep and low bass effect to invoke fear in people. Several ghostly figures are visible in the background. The music continues until the ghosts disappear, at which point it will move to more tranquil music for a soothing, solacing technique.

The scene is of a dark room, with no visible walls or ceiling (extends in darkness, with the light being torch or candle like. The floor is stone with a gymph or pentagram type shape drawn in chalk on it. Inside the odd-occult looking pentagram stands Keith Solaris, the Tremere Primogen, wearing a dark, creepy robe. He stands, sleeves pulled back, holding an ornately carved steel box. He opens the box, and green- purple light flies out, The lights turn into ghosts and demon-like creatures, swirling around his head (computer effects). They soon disappear, and it is very dark. A soft yellow light appears from the box, grows brighter, and out of the box, formed by sparkly shinning glitter and star-like mass forms, an angelic figure (who looks remarkably like Lucien Hawke) rises.

The music has been tranquil, but becomes excited and tragic/sad by the end of this scene.

The next scene is outdoors, on the top of a cliff, during a bright winter day. A man is walking, cloaked in animal skins. It is Lucien, but he looks too perfect, almost plastic or porcelain like, and no breath escapes his lips. He is walking alone, and sees smoke in the sky. He drops a parcel he was carrying and races towards the smoke. The smoke is coming from a tiny village which is on fire, and being attacked by a barbarian horde. The horde is hacking and killing everyone. Lucien picks up a small girl that runs to him, and turns to flee. As he runs, an arrow strikes him in the leg, and he falls. We see the ugly barbarian who shot the arrow, who then runs up to Lucien's prostrate form, which is lying face down. The barbarian pulls Lucien's head back and slits his throat. We then see the barbarian killing the child, as seen from Lucien's vantage point. Lucien's blood flows from his throat, spilling over the rocks, dripping through cracks, onto the marble rocks in a cavern.

This is where the video would normally start for the normal cut version. Vocals also start from this point.

This scene begins with miners/quarry men dressed in ancient robes harvesting marble, and dragging it away. We then cut to a new scene. It is day, in a studio in the Greek style (lots of white, pillars, thin billowing veils). Alix Wheelwright-Rook, the Harpy, is examining a block of marble, tools in hand. He begins to carve and sculpt the stone, chipping away parts at a time, and wiping perspiration from his brow due to the hard work. Soon it is apparent what he is carving a life sized sculpture of an angel, which looks like Lucien Hawke. When it is nearly complete (torso, arms, head, and wings finished) a feather appears unnoticed by Alix's feet. While he is smoothing the torso he feels a drop on his arm. He looks up to see that the statue appears to be crying, and as he continues to look, its eyes open. Alix jumps back, and the statue glows and comes to life, floating in the air in front of him. The angel then fades in a spiralling cloud.

It is sunrise in the desert. A hammer is silhouetted as it is raised to strike. This happens several times, and then we then see it is being used to perform a crucifixion. The figure being crucified has his arms held down as the final nails are hammered in. He is then raised and we see it is a Christ-like figure wearing a crown of thorns. The figure is actually a sad-looking Felix Fairchild of Clan Toreador. A scantily clad woman can then be seen applying SPF 30 suntan lotion onto Felix. The angel (Lucien) then appears, floating in the air in front of Felix. Felix looks up, and they look into each other's eyes for some time, then Felix smiles. The angel leans/floats forward and kisses Felix's forehead, then disappears in a sparkling mist.

The next scene opens on a crowd at night. They are dressed in old clothes, resembling peasants and such. They are cheering around a giant stake. There is a woman dressed in French armour (fleur-de-lis, etc.) bound to the pole, with straw and wood piled around it. The woman is Meredith James LaFontaine, the Seneschal. She looks sad, and is crying. The angel then appears before her, fading into view. The crowd is motionless now, standing perfectly still. The angel tilts Meredith's head up to a proud position, and wipes a tear from her eye. She smiles softly, as he disappears in an array of glitter. Torches are then seen put to the mound, setting it ablaze, the crowd cheering all the while.

For the next bit, it is dark, and night. People are standing in the mud; they are soldiers dressed in World War II uniforms, and their heads are bowed. A preacher stands in front of them, giving them a blessing. The rain then begins to pour down as they line up for the charge. They jump up and race across the ground as we see Nazi machine gunners cutting them down. People are falling all over, some onto barbwire; others into the mud until all are dead. The priest (Vilos Cohagen of Clan Toreador) pulls the cross from his neck, and throws it into the mud. From that vantage point we see him pull a handgun from a dead soldier and shoot himself in the head. The Angel is watching, floating in the air. He is not shinning, and is weeping. He grabs his head in rage, screaming, and then soars up.

It is very bright, and daylight. There are clouds everywhere (imagine a typical 'heaven' stereotype). The angel Lucien bursts through the clouds, coming to rest at the base of a citadel. He steps up, and a female angel blocks his way (C.B., a Brujah Anarch). She does not budge, but we see a hand gesture her aside from within. Lucien approaches a man dressed in flowing white robes. Lucien has a questioning look on his face to 'God', tears fill his eyes. God (Randel Zane, a Toreador Anarch) gives him a stern, uncaring look, and a dismissing hand gesture. Lucien's eyes turn red (a digital effect), he then screams and claws Randel's face.

The music goes quiet for a few seconds.

Randel heals his face (as the scene with Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire). There is then a 3 shot repeat of Randel turning to Lucien (3/4 body shot, head shot, zoom of eyes shot, where we see the eyes appear to have a bonfire behind them). There is then a red-pink flash.

We then fades into a black and white scene (mostly dark greys) of Lucien lying face up on the ground in plain clothes (in a trench coat). It is raining and night. He is lying on a paved street, that has a shattered pattern splayed out as representing wings opened up behind him. He gets up and begins to walk around, through the slums of the city. This will graphically show the most terrible squalor of Toronto, showing people begging, the sick and homeless, gang violence (e.g. shooting a man a number of times and not running away), people selling drugs, drug addicted prostitutes, people walking by, indifferent to those with their hands out, etc. We then see three big men robbing a couple dressed in average clothing. The couple gives them their money, and one of the men shoots the woman in the stomach. She falls; her boyfriend (Elliot Fontaine of Clan Toreador) catches her. The man points a gun at Elliot's head, and we can see Lucien in the background. Lucien in a flash appears there, grabbing the man and throwing him away. One of the other thugs pulls a gun and shoots at Lucien and Elliot. Lucien stands in front of Elliot, arms outstretched, catching all the bullets. The wounds bleed green glowing blood, and heal like in The Crow. The thug drops his gun, and the robbers run away. Lucien turns to Elliot, who is holding the girl in his arms. He is sobbing, and she looks quite dead. Wings then sprout from Lucien's back as he again takes on an angelic visage, and he takes to the air. He flies above the dark city, just beneath the overcast clouds; his arms outstretched in a cross-like pattern. A bright light emanates from his body and spreads across and away from him, tearing up the ground and pushing it away as it does so. As the wave passes, we see the Angel is gone, but in his place the sky is perfectly clear, and the city looks modern, clean, and white, near marble-like, as the camera pans over it, and the scene fades to black.
