The Prophecy of Baker

by Susan Lemke

IN THE FIRST did I find myself standing at a shore of blood. And I did touch the sand at my feet, and I did know it to be the dust of countless Kindred. And I did taste the foam at the ocean of blood, and I did know it to be the blood of countless Kine. And in the sand before me was a large, curled shell, vacant, devoid of life, and beautiful.

AT THE NEXT did I find myself in an Elysium's halls, with torn curtains fluttering in a broken glass breeze, with shattered stone scattered across a craked floor. Before me stood four Kindred.

THE SAILOR lifted his gaze to me, the brand of God upon the right palm and said, "The Kindred shall consume one another."

THE MUSICIANS lifted their gaze to me, the children of God, marked upon their face and breast, and said, "The Kindred shall be consumed by the fires of the Sun."

AND THE HALLS did tremble and the sacred four did fade from view.

AT THE NEXT did I see two angels chained to the Earth, weak and restless. Before them stood Marie, the voice of God, the love of God, marked upon the throat, doubly so. And the Gargoyle, the Shield of God, of the blessed race.

AND MARIE did raise her hands to the skies, and she did scream a shout of fury, of joy, of terror.

AND BAKER, the Dread God, the Fire of Caine, the herald of the END, did burst forth from the ground at her feet, and did step forward to do his work.

AND THE ANGELS did lift their arms to stop him, but they were only angels, and thus were Destroyed by the God Who Cannot Die.

AND THE WINDS of mourning did sound with a wailing and the skies blackened with countless Birds, and the Earth became as the shell, the sea and the shore.

AND ALL was still and quiet, but for Baker's tread upon the shore.

AND HE AND I there walked, together in peace, Forever.
