August 19, 2003 - Vietnam
Canada and Vietnam have begun negotiations towards a bilateral agreement on the foreign adoption of Vietnamese orphans by Canadians. The Vietnamese government has already formed the International Child Adoption Department, which will oversee child adoption activities in Vietnam. So far, bilateral agreements have been reached with France, Italy and Denmark.>.
2002 Adoption Statistics
According to the latest statistics by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Canadians adopted 1,891 children from abroad in 2002. This was a slight increase from 2001 when Canadians adopted 1,874 children from foreign countries.
