Aritomo Yamagata (June 14, 1838-February 1, 1922)
He was a field marshal in the Imperial Japanese Army and twice Prime Minister of Japan. He is considered one of the architects of the military and political foundations of Meiji era Japan. Yamagata led the newly modernized Imperial Army against the Satsuma Rebellion led by Saigo Takamori in 1877.

Storage box was made in August, 1922 and inscribed "Yamagata Gansetsu kou kaishi waka isshu" on the cover by the owner Kudo Sou. Interior of the cover inscribed the date and place of possession. Also inscribed "Yamagata Aritomo, Kaishi, Fuji no Uta, Souhoukenzou" on sticker.
Size of the Kaishi paper: 47.2 cm X 35.2 cm
Size of the mounted hanging scroll: 61 cm X 128.5 cm
Ivory roller ends.
One side of bottom Interior of the storage box broken, Tape stains on the top and side of the storage box, the hanging scroll in good condition.

A Waka Japanese style poem about Mt.Fuji composed and written on a decorated Kaishi paper by Aritomo Yamagata.
Note: According to the popular T.V. program "Nandemo Kantei-dan", TV Tokyo, June 19th, 2007, letters addressed to a Satsuma clan Samurai from five prominent Bakumatsu (end of Edo period) politicians which were mounted onto a folding screen. And this screen was valued at three million Yen. One of the five politicians was Aritomo Yamagata and his letter was valued at 500,000.Yen (U.S.$4,327.)
