Maša's Bird Project

I went bird watching in my neighborhood. I went to the Beach, to Ashbridges Bay, Kew Beach Park, and around houses on Beaches. I used books from library: Peterson Field Guides For Young Naturalists: Backyard Birds and National Audubon Society: First Field Guide BIRDS

STARLING

A starling has white spots on its black body. You can find starlings in a garden, on a telephone line, anywhere! A starling is a backyard bird. They are most common birds where I live. They hop all over: on the ground, on trees, and on the roof tops. They come to my balcony. I see them in small and large groups. They chirp all the time. I found out starlings eat berries, grass, bugs and bread.

HOUSE SPARROW

A sparrow is smaller than a starling. It is brown. Sparrows hide in leafs, in the bushes, they are at the beach, and you can see them on the street as well. They eat and hop on my balcony. They are also a backyard bird. They chirp all the time. I saw them eating bread on my balcony and I saw them eating croutons behind the restaurant.

BLUE JAY

Every blue jay is blue. They eat peanuts. They hop on the wires. They also hop in trees. The ones l saw were attracted by a bird feeder and they were probably a couple.

CARDINAL

Cardinals are backyard birds. Male cardinals are red. Cardinals don't migrate. I saw a cardinal in an evergreen tree. It was alone.

MALLARD
Male mallards have green heads. Female mallards have brown heads. Their bodies are brown. You can find mallards in Ashbridges Bay or in a pond at the Woodbine Park. They were swimming there, because they are ducks. They have skin between toes, so they can swim better. They were dive into the water so they can eat. It was funny when they flapped their wings. This summer I saw a mother duck with babies and one of them went far away from them and then came back.

PIGEON

Most of the pigeons are gray, but some I saw had black and white feathers. I saw them at the beach, fire station, electrical building and at the gas station. They are all over Beaches. I saw two dating and two cleaning themselves in the sun. They eat bread and anything they find.

CANADA GEESE

This summer I read a story that is presented in Woodbine Park about Canada Geese. People were giving them food and growing grass around the pond and pond became muddy from geese poop. They stop migrating because there was enough food to eat. This summer I saw them in the park eating grass and in the lake swimming. This fall I saw them swimming in the Ashbridges Bay and eating grass by the Water Filtration Plant.

SWAN
They are white and have long necks. Their babies are gray. Story the Ugly Duckling is about the baby swan that grew up to beautiful white swan. During the summer the swans had babies. I saw them at Ashbridges Bay. There were five baby swans. They were swimming with parents. They were swimming around boats eating nachos that people were throwing. This fall I saw a swan. It was alone swimming in the water in Ashbridges Bay.

SEAGULS

They are white and the young ones are gray and brown. They fly above the rocks on the beach and swim in the lake. They eat everything they find. They eat even from the garbage cans. Sometimes they are alone and sometimes they are in large flocks.
