81 Yorkville Ave. Walk down steps to this small space, decorated with Tibetan blues and yellows. The Yorkville restaurant has limited seating but an intimate setting. Thang (clear soup w/ spinach-- $2.00) is salty and pleasantly eggy. Chick peas w/ cucumber ($3.25) are parsley-fresh, with softly peppered yoghurt on firm cubed cucumbers. Tse momo ($6.75) is a favourite-- steamed beef and vegetable dumplings in soft or crisped rice shells, dipped in diverse hot sauces. Sauteed tofu ($6.95) is bland but the vegetables are fresh. Shopta ($10.95) brings razor-thin sliced beef marinated with ginger and garlic, the meat absorbing the strong scents with a trace of tomato. Shogok Ngapa ($7.50) has baby potatoes simmered with beef and onions, but they're too heavy together. For adventure, try butter and salt tea ($2.50 / pot); not for the faint of heart. |
