833 Bloor St. W. This place is authentic Japanese among imitation cuisine in Little Korea. Adorned with images of sumo wrestlers ("Rikishi"= sumo), the homey space is modest, with prints on the walls and several booths along the side. The menu is cloth-bound with countless entries, and there's a separate list for vegetarians. Kimpin gobo ($3.75) is good peasant food- fresh burdock and crisp carrot strips with a light, savoury sesame dressing. Salted mackerel ($4.50) is broiled and served cold, tender inside with a marinated outer layer. Sansai noodles ($6.50) are wild with uniquely textured mushrooms in a rich, subtle soup. Great deals abound: Sushi deluxe ($18.25) comes with a huge variety of fishes and veg rolls, though some fish is bland, and the vegetarian bento box ($13.50) has everything from crisp, almost translucent tempura to avocado maki and soup. Plentiful extras such as pickles and vegetables served throughout. |
