Happy Seven Restaurant

$50

Unassuming from Spadina, the interior is open and bright. Decorative orange price lists adorn the walls and sea creatures lounge in aquaria. The comfortable plush red chairs are almost too cozy.

Bean curd w/ mixed seafood soup ($4.75) is dull, but has generous fresh ingredients; the melon and crab meat soup ($5.50) is clear and light with a fresh, fruity sweetness. Sizzling scallops in black bean sauce hot plate ($10.99) come sharp and fresh in a bed of spicy liquid.

Buddha's vegetables ($7.95) are crisp and free of grease or oil, in a generous portion. Fu-kin ("established prosperity") fried rice ($7.50) is massive, with a medley of mixed vegetables and seafood. Braised duck has a smoky but subtle sour flavour, gentle with diced cubes of tofu.

Avoid the noodle dishes ($6.50-8.50); most are dull and lifeless.
