- Cornwall: The town where I grew up and the region where my ancestors settled. This site is hopelessly boosterish-- Cornwall is fine, but the last I'd heard, the insanely lucrative smuggling trade had dropped off, but the crime remained; the once happy if poor town was still poor, but with boarded up shops; and it still smells of sulphur, thanks to the paper mill. The region is beautiful, though. See also the Chamber of Commerce, or read the city's newspaper, the Standard Freeholder. The newspaper is unfortunately owned by the Southam media conglomerate, which is in turn owned by ultra-conservative and evil media robber-baron Conrad Black, abusing our democratic sensibilities to promote his version of Political Truth.
- Brampton: The other place where I grew up, a suburb of Toronto-- nice enough, if you can tolerate endless suburbia, though the parks system is admittedly fantastic. You can also try Virtual Brampton, a guide to some of the city's businesses.
- Mille Roches: The town where my mother grew up, one of
- seven villages callously destroyed by the poorly thought-out St. Lawrence Seaway mega-project in the late 1950's... are mega-projects ever not totally disastrous? The loss of the villages was even the subject of a documentary, and the villagers are still resentful. They were transplanted into the cold, concrete "planned towns" of Ingleside and Long Sault (pro. "Long Soo"), with no real character or life. They just didn't know how to fight back, or even think they could-- too used to doing what corporations and the government told them to do, no matter how much it affected them.
