An episode of the Pokemon TV series entitled
"Pokemon Fashion Flash" has a moment that satirized The Rose of Versailles.
The two villains in Team Rocket (Jessie and James) run a beauty salon as a front for their
evil designs, and at a key moment when they go into battle, James presses a button on a
star-studded microphone and the salon turns into a huge Takarazuka-like stage. Jessie
appears dressed like Oscar and James appears as Marie Antoinette. Very interesting moment.
Probably rings all sorts of bells for Japanese viewers of a certain age, but it probably goes
over the heads of most American viewers.
