Bridge and Poker

Bridge and poker have a lot in common. They are both popular skill card games with a strong global presence, attracting people of different ages and social background. Read more about the background histories of these two great games.

Similarities and Differences

Both bridge and poker are card games, but for most, the similarities seem to end there. However, there are many other similarities:

«       Both the bridge and the poker games require skill and practice to master them

«       Both have a rich history

«       In both games it is easy to let your emotions get better of you, to make you become impulsive, causing you to make costly mistakes

«       Both games require good judgment and consistently optimal play

«       Both games can become an obsession, make you to sacrifice other pleasures of life. Thus, a responsible attitude towards them is a must.

There also are many differences between them:

«       It is much easier to learn the rules of playing poker than of playing bridge, although it takes a long time to master them in both cases

«       Both bridge and poker aficionados have fought to prove that their game is one of skill and not simply “the luck of the draw.” And this is true. Poker has done this in a number of ways, one is through poker tournaments in which the best players will win or finish high consistently. However, you still need hands better than your opponents, at least from time to time, to have a chance to win. Competitive bridge (or “duplicate” bridge, as it is called) is a sport from which “Lady Luck” has been completely eliminated. It does not mater how “bad” is your hand, you still can win if you play it well because the score is awarded by comparing how well the same cards distribution of the hand was played at all the other tables.

«       Bridge is a team game, you play in pair with a partner against opposing pairs. Thus, you do not play alone, and how well or how bad you play reflects on the results of your partner, too. Poker is an individual game, thus you have only yourself to blame if you make a mistake, or congratulate if you win.

«       In bridge you do not have to research your competition to know how the opposing pair plays because they must show you their playing system right from the beginning. It is much more important to understand how your partner plays. In poker, it is important to know the playing style and tendencies of your opponents, to have an edge.

«       While the rules of bridge playing are unique, there is a variety of rules for playing poker. Currently, the most popular type of poker is the one called “Texas hold them up”.

History - Name of the Game

Both bridge and poker have names that have absolutely nothing to do with the format, theme or play of the game in any way. The origin of both names is shrouded in mystery, although both are said to derive from old language words: bridge from Britch, an old Russian word that may have meant “to announce,” and poker from Poque, a French word that may have meant “to bluff.”

Evolution

Both bridge and poker evolved from earlier games that were popular in Europe. Bridge grew out of an immensely popular game known as Whist, whereas poker derives from an English game called Brag.
