The French label that launched the careers of so many through their Sourcelab series now turn their attention to a new generation for Source Material. Rather than the house of Cassius and Dimitri From Paris, this compilation raises up a crop of French funksters, many who successfully recreate a rare groovin' '60s instrumental sound. Riff HiFi's "The Wizz Song" features the funky drumming with lots of spacy Moog sounds and more synth samples from the master, Pierre Henry. Bertrand Burgalat's "Kim" is like an early Soft Machine turned on to lounge-funk. (The Dust Brothers label has signed him up for an album.) And ZFO's "P Funk 1 & II" recalls a raw Parliament/Funkadelic with its authentically down and dirty distorted R&B and appropriate voice box delivery. Source Material also includes many influenced by Air's keyboard-oriented style, so look out for Phoenix, Oomiao and Sebastien Tellier for the soft melodic stuff.
