Abandon Head is the long-in coming solo debut by ex Meat Beat Manifesto member Jonny Stephens. He was a member of MBM from 1989 to 1995, and took part in their top remixes of Coil, Orbital, Scorn and others. As Fire Escape he debuted with a remix of MBM's "Mindstream," and also had a track on Volume's Sally's Photographic Memory compilation. On his own Jonny has tended towards a structured song approach, with himself on vocals ("love em or hate em" as he says on his website). He's got a better voice than Jack Dangers however - it kinda reminds me of Julian Cope. His songs are excellently produced, but a little on the wrong side of the rhythmic balance for my present tastes.
Abandon Head features an overall feel of noir-ish 50's jazz and guitar twang (and cover art to match), with "Earthsick" tending towards a spacey Spiritualized-type sound. He still capitalises on Meat Beat-style atmospheric synth textures, and on a couple of excellent instrumentals ("Getaway People" and "Wasabi") expertly updates his funky dance rhythms with nice arrangements and jazz orchestra samples. More of those tracks would be appreciated.
