ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Andrew Bowerbank has been studying karate-do intensively since 1974. He has also spent a few years studying kendo and aikido, further developing his insight into Japanese budo concepts. In the summer of 1990, he was sent by Tsuruoka O-Sensei to train at the Japan Karate Association headquarters in Tokyo.

In 1994 Mr. Bowerbank became the founding president of the Tsuruoka Karate Association of Ontario. The following year he designed, and—with the aid of fellow karate-ka—built the Tsuruoka Canadian Budokai hombu dojo in Toronto, Canada.
