Welcome to the Hombu Dojo

The Tsuruoka Canadian Budokai is the Hombu Dojo (headquarters) for Tsuruoka Karate in Canada. It is a spacious dojo, with sprung hardwood floors, shower facilities and karate training equipment.

O-Sensei Masami Tsuruoka brought karate to Canada in 1958 and is recognized by our government as the "father of Canadian karate." Today, O-Sensei Tsuruoka teaches at this facility, built through the pride and dedication of his students.

At our dojo, karate is taught as an art, a lifestyle and a means of overall physical fitness and health. Members take pride in the fact they are learning concepts that have been developed over hundreds of years. Everyone works together with a good sense of camaraderie and personal dedication.

Two of O-Sensei Tsuruoka's students own and operate this facility. They have been studying karate since 1974 and are on hand to teach classes and answer questions.

Sensei Andrew Bowerbank has a degree in education from the University of Western Ontario. He traveled to Japan in 1990 to study karate at the head dojo of the Japan Karate Association. He has also spent several years studying kendo and aikido.

Sampai Martin Hung competed in almost all traditional tournaments available from 1976 to 1978. During this time, he succeeded in winning or placing in every karate event he entered.

"I really enjoy karate because it has the ability to simultaneously stimulate and soothe both body and soul."

Christina Fisher, physician & karate student
