This hummingbird is a fairly common resident in both islands and may even visit suburban gardens.
It is not often recognized that the black throat and chest are bordered by merging deep blue feathers.
This is an important diagnostic feature. The drab throat and chest are relieved by the rainbow colours of the
primary wing feathers and the mantle.
