Andrew Neil Olscher is a professional Canadian artist and writer living near Lakefield, Ontario. His bold thickly textured, acrylic paintings and plaster cast and clay sculptures have been shown and purchased by private and corporate collectors and galleries locally and internationally.

Drawing on a rich, multi-cultural heritage and multi-disciplined artistic experiences, Andrew began painting as an experiment in expression of "simple notions of beauty". "I had no intention of making any social, or political statement, " he explains. Ironically that changed when he was invited to exhibit his work some years ago in Barbados at the "Village of Hope", in association with a United Nations Global Conference that dealt with environmental issues.

"Showing my work as a symbol of ‘environmental hope’ really changed the   way I look at what I do.

I used to think of my paintings as being basically abstract. The landscapes and more impressionistic floral images that I used in many of them, provided a "handle" for the viewer who preferred a starting point from which to begin exploring the colours and textures. That hasn’t totally changed. But now being on the verge of abstraction seems appropriate as the beauty of our environment unfortunately becomes less of a reality. I am now a little more careful with my work in attempting to create a universality and familiarity for the viewer. I find it interesting when three different people find the same piece of work a reminder of the marsh they used to live near, western American plains they grew up on, or perhaps an exploratory jungle walk they took while on holiday on a Caribbean island. I hope my work will be a reflection of how things used to be in so many   more places around the

world -- and a reminder of what they should be."

Andrew has been involved with the arts all his life. In the past he has worked as a professional musician and actor. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Queen’s University and was a scholarship winner to the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he studied with the Canadian Brass.  In 1996, 1997,1998 and 1999 he performed as guest conductor with one of central Ontario’s foremost chamber ensembles, the Apollo Chamber Orchestra.

As a writer his commentaries and articles have been published by a number of  local and major, daily newspapers, including The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. One of his articles is included in an anthology, along with works by well known writers such as Robertson Davies and

Michael Ondaatje. The anthology, entitled Insights: Choices, was published by Harcourt Brace Canada. He currently has a novel and children’s book, that he wrote and illustrated, being considered by  publishing houses for publication.

To round out his artistic skill set, Andrew recently earned his first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

"There is no doubt in my mind that working in one artistic medium reflects heavily on the others. As a self-taught visual artist I am very aware of the effect that my classical training has had on my work. There is a very obvious connection between how I perform as a visual and martial artist, writer, musician and actor. I could not be one without being the other," Andrew concludes.
