Erotic Art - A State of Mind

“Eroticism is very much a state of mind. What one person finds erotic, another may find silly, unstimulating, or perhaps even pornographic. Ultimately limits of perceived eroticism are always set by an individual’s own sensibilities and set of moral values -- independent of legal definitions, legislated community standards, or in some cases an individual’s own presentation of themselves while in the polite company of others. Sexuality is very much ingrained in each one of us as an individual -- that is the state of human nature.

Many of the sculptures and paintings featured in the gallery, will undoubtedly be perceived by some viewers as erotic and for others will quite likely, emotionally encompass all of the various feelings discussed above. However, the main focus and theme of the works, is by no means intended to be solely recognized as eroticism. Rather, they are intended to tackle a much wider range of issues.

Though many are hesitant, or in some cases loathe to admit it, women play a very strong role in every society. More obviously they are the bearers of life, without whom none of us would exist. Less obvious perhaps, they are very much in control of the behavior of men in just about every facet of life -- sometimes for better, sometimes for worse .

The artworks are intended to celebrate this strength and point it out to others who have yet to recognize this innate underlying dominance. They are not intended to be feminist, or anti-feminist. In some of the prints and paintings, the women depicted have their arms raised above their heads in celebration and victory -- whatever activity they happen to be participating in. The fact that the subjects are nude is representative of the natural order of this strong position. The bold, vibrant colours of the paintings, yet another celebration and recognition that many more women are beginning to understand and facilitate their position in order to live a better, more fulfilling life. The more simple strokes and outlines of the various figures also represent the immense power that women are capable of wielding. The complexity of the backgrounds represent the difficulties and complexities of positively influencing the balance of our society, without threatening the rights and liberties of all individuals alike - - male, female, feminist, anti-feminist and all that lie philosophically in between.”
