Sweet Exorcist's DJ Parrott returns to the limelight with a very strange mix of pop and leftfield dance stylings. As the All Seeing I he's been slowly rebuilding his profile over the last few years, with mutant dancehall singles from the independent Earth label. From a 1997 Earth single comes the mysterious, "I Walk," where a bluesy Portishead-style female vocal meets a phat electro-dancehall rhythm. Actually the version on this CD is the vinyl remix, originally called "Pickled Eggs & Sherbet" - a title now used elsewhere. Also sporting crackling vinyl sounds and a dancehall-meets-tech-step beat is the All Seeing I's trippy version of Sonny & Cher's hit "Beat Goes On" (whose 1998 remixes are highly recommended). More uptempo and with lower bass is the similar wild clonk-ish grooves of the instrumental "Big Pecker." Aside from this EP's worth of great tracks you are left with Parrot's perverse sense of pop, which sees the I doing hit collaborations with star Sheffielders like 70's Brit crooner Tony Christie ("Walk Like A Panther"), Phil Oakey from Human League ("1st Man In Space") and Jarvis Cocker from Pulp (for whom the All Seeing I remixed "Part Hard"). Actually Cocker and Parrot go back, as the popstar directed the video for Sweet Exorcist's "Testone" (he also has a Warp connection, as the label reportedly oversaw the manufacturing of reissues of Pulp's early material).
